Dr. C R Prasad has over 40 years of experience in Indian Energy Sector with thorough exposure to various facets of the industry such as Exploration and Production of oil and natural gas, Engineering and Construction of large oil/gas production complexes located offshore, setting up of mega petrochemical complexes, petrochemical production etc. He worked as Director (Marketing & Planning), GAIL from October, 1994 and took over as Chairman & Managing Director of GAIL in September, 1996. Held additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director of Madras Refineries Ltd. (now known as Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd.) in 1999. He also acted as the Chairman of Mahanagar Gas Ltd., Mumbai, a joint venture of GAIL, British Gas and Government of Maharashtra formed for distribution of city gas in Mumbai. He also Chaired the Board of Indraprastha Gas Ltd., Delhi, a joint venture company of GAIL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. and Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi formed for distribution of city gas and supply of Compressed Natural Gas to the transport sector in Delhi.

Has professional experience of over 42 years comprising of direct field exposure in Planning, Installation, Testing, commissioning and Operation Maintenance of Medium to Large Hydro Generating Units followed by extensive experience in Contracts Management at Corporate Office. He was an Executive Director in NHPC since 27.7.2000 and superannuated on 30.6.2005. During the course of career, got the opportunity to be associated with Turbine Model Testing in Sweden and Japan and Contracts related assignments in France and Switzerland.
